The Wonder Wasp is John Tanaka's F-Zero machine. It was originally a hobby project that was intended for recreational use. However, when Jody Summer began racing, John Tanaka applied heavy modifications to the machine to make it fit for the races. Although it being a homemade machine has brought doubts, John Tanaka used his experience as the Galactic Space Federation's mechanic and was very thorough about what parts he used. The result is a small lightweight machine capable of powerful boosts, but its body and grip are below-average.

The Wonder Wasp started out as a hobby project that John Tanaka built for recreational use. However, when he heard that Jody Summer, the girl of his dreams, was participating in the F-Zero races, he undertook massive customization on his homemade machine. Some may doubt the quality of a homebuilt machine, but there's no reason to—as the mechanic of the Galactic Space Federation, Tanaka was a stickler about every last part that went into the Wonder Wasp. It's truly a machine built with an artisan's spirit. The Wonder Wasp's lightweight construction and rapid-fire energy bursts are its biggest weapons.

F-Zero GP: Legend

The Wonder Wasp becomes available after clearing all of the missions in the eight character's separate stories. It has impressive acceleration and cornering but is not very fast.

F-Zero Climax

The Wonder Wasp becomes available after clearing the gold cup on expert or higher.

Design and namesake

Design

The Wonder Wasp is one of the smaller machines with an intricate design. Its primary components consist of a small pod with two legs connected underneath by thin sheets of metal. The pot has a triangular canopy in the front with the engines positioned in the way back horizontally. Cooling vents are found above the engines and on the pod's nose. The legs are long, narrow irregular trapeziums with the car's name printed on the sides in white. The machine is primarily a light blue with yellow around the canopy and leg connectors and a white stripe running across the back of the sides of the pod.

Name

The Wonder Wasp combines the words wonder, having remarkable properties or abilities and wasp, a stinging, eusocial insect.

Correlation

The wonder aspect of Wonder Wasp reflects on the machine's homemade status and how John was able to get good racing statistics out of it. The wasp part is reflected on its small size and racing performances. The design vaguely matches its descriptor with the legs resembling a wasp's thin wings and the front vent resembling its mouth.

Differences between games

The Wonder Wasp was primarily changed when it transferred from F-Zero GX to F-Zero: GP Legend. The sky blue changed to a slightly darker blue and jumped two additional engines placing them in the back ends of the legs.

Trivia

  • The Wonder Wasp is one of two machines that's named after a bug. The other being the Pink Spider.
    • Oddly enough, they share the same wreckage model in F-Zero GX.
